Stage 1- Floor Levelling, Screeds and Render

Before laying the tiles, you will first need to prepare the surfaces or substrates such as plasterboard, cement screeds, plywood or wood surfaces, at this stage ensure the surfaces or the floors are smooth and level before tiling, if you want a perfectly smooth surfaces, you will need self-smoothing floor levelling compound, example ACRYBASE POWDER- which comes in two parts. This product is used for preparing floors for tiling and most suitable for different substrates, and on wet and dry, interior, and exterior. The product is much suitable for heavy traffic areas such as shopping centres, airports, offices, schools etc. After the application your tilling work can start after 4 hours.

Tiling in areas such as power showers, wet rooms, total immersion areas or external areas, you will need to ensure your substrates are protected from water penetration by using water proofing products. The application of these adhesive products ensures maximum protection, very suitable for laundry or utility rooms, fountains, water features, terrace and balconies.

Primers & Sealers

Before fixing tiles, certain surfaces require priming and sealing to reduce porosity and minimise the risk of chemical reactions.  The primers are used for preparation of your floors prior to fixing ceramic, porcelain, stone and mosaic tiles, again primers and sealers adds strengths and waterproofing to surfaces before tiling.

Step 2- Grouting Products

Quickest Render or Cement Base Materials

These tile laying products or grout are made from polymer modified cement/sand mix for preparation of your surfaces prior to tiling or slating. It is used for rendering walls, plasterboard, and most substrates before tiling, also suitable for wet and dry, exterior, and interior environments. It is a fast-setting materials and accepts foot traffic in 3 hours, may be tiled after 4 hours on bonded screeds and 48 hours (on un-bonded or flooring screeds). Some of the products are suitable for areas of total immersion i.e swimming pools and wet areas such as bathrooms, thus providing water and frost resistant features.

Other grout products are used for joints, walls and floors, the tile grout is essential for any tiling project as it bridges the gaps between each tile and fixes the tile to either the wall or floors, some have anti-mould properties for fixing tiles in bathrooms, kitchens and wet rooms as the cement-based formulas protect the tiles from water, chemicals and heat. The choice of grout depends also on the tiles colours, tile grout colours come in different colours, popular ones are grey, black, white and beige, this gives a perfect match by creating contrasting grout lines within the tiles.

Tiling Adhesives

Tiling adhesive is an essential product for your tiling project. The tile adhesive is used to fix the tile to either the floor or wall by suing a trowel to spread the adhesive in sections as you lay the tiles. there are different types of tile adhesives and each adhesive product is suitable for the type of slating products. Do also consider the environmental factors such as wet rooms or dry, so select from water and mould resistant adhesives that are suitable for bathrooms and kitchens.

Step 3- Laying or Fixing the Tiles

After considering and selecting the tile fixing products and the type of tile to be used, now is the time to lay the tiles, you will need tile installation tools, such as grouting tools, tiling trowels and tile spacers.

Tile spacers are essential for tilers looking for accurate tile placement. The tile spacers come in varying sizes depending on the spacing required, the spacers ensure consistency in the gaps between individual tiles, the use of the spacers ensures your floor or wall tiling are uniform and symmetrical in appearance.

Silicone Sealants

Silicone sealants and sealers are crucial part of any tiling installation. The sealants provide protection for the your tile, as well as providing the perfect finish to ensure your ceramic, porcelain, stone or mosaic shingles or tiling project looks great for years to come. These sealants are ready to use for general purpose sealing including movement joints, and for most surface types, wet or dry, interior or exterior. Most applications for sealing spaces around sinks, worktops, baths, basins etc.
